UDL Editions by CAST offers guided reading and literary analysis at varying levels for learners from grades 5-12. As a middle-grades Language Arts teacher, I especially like their guiding questions for examining and enhancing author’s craft, which can be used for literary analysis, or for a workshop setting to improve student writing. The following questions are just one of the many resources available for examining Author’s Craft.
Using the sample videos included in this post, or any visual text, teachers can use the following questions to guide students in the process of character analysis, while students can use these questions to workshop their own narrative writing for elements of author’s craft.
Characterization: Self Check
Ask yourself these questions when trying to understand characterization:
- What does the character look like?
- How does the character behave towards others? How do others behave toward the character?
- What does the character seem to care about?
- What adjectives/colors/symbols/sounds does the author use to describe the character’s personality?
- What does the character think or say?
